Regretfully, I am no longer able to use your disks. The problem probably results from my recent upgrading to a Mac IIcx with 4 megs RAM, 80 HD and color monitor and using System v.6.03, Finder v.6.1
You need to do something.
Sincerely, John A. Wacker

Mr. Wacker:
Your problem is not unique. We are doing something. We have a Mac SE-30 on order, and as soon as it gets in we will be able to do much better testing of programs as they come in. Without a 68030 Mac we have been relying on beta-testers to report bugs. Unfortunately that means we have to schedule a program before we find out whether it is compatible with the 68030 Macs. Usually we can get the programmer to fix the problems, but fixing a problem that does not exist on your own machine is an extremely difficult job.
Another problem we have with the 68030 machines is one that I have no answer to right now. We use System 3.2 on our disks because that was the smallest system that worked on all Macs when we started. Unfortunately that system will not work on the new 68030 Macs. There is no way that we can afford to put a later system on the disk because of space considerations. So we are impaled on the horns of a dilemma. Either we take the system off entirely, thereby alienating all of our customers who are not fortunate enough to own a hard drive or at least an extra floppy drive, or we publish a system that causes problems for those subscribers who have the newest machines. I have to admit that my sympathies are more with those who have the older machines than with the newer, but I am fighting to get the system removed anyway. This is an ongoing battle, and I will keep you posted.

Dear Sean,
Going back to some past Diskworld offerings, I was agreeably surprised at what I had passed without the scrutiny I normally apply. Checkmate, after I learned how to use it, was one that fulfilled the expectations that I had previously given to the Excel budget. I am enjoying Diskworld and find the right mix of applications, DA’s, fonts, games, clip art, and utilities among the offerings. I appreciate your watching over the product and sending us the best, useable result. Your frank statement and substitution of program in issue #12 was appreciated.
Included with this letter is my next subscription to your excellent service. I hope that you may continue with your superb product as in the past.
Your truly,
Raeburn Ware

To the Editor:
I’ve always wanted to jot down a few words regarding DiskWorld for the Mac, having been a long-time subscriber to the Apple II version of your disk magazine and now a subscriber to this one. Basically, I think the work you’re doing on the Mac is pretty high calibre stuff, and it is appreciated.
The use of a system folder in the disk does have its advantages and disadvantages. For me, its primary disadvantage is that I have to remember to boot up with my own system in order to use the laser printer, which is not in your system folder.
Your system also doesn’t have as many fonts as does mine: the hard disk is nice for several fonts.
The advantage of a system folder on your disk, obviously, is for those with imagewriters and/or those who don’t have a hard drive.
Keep on plugging: I’m having a fine time waiting for each monthly issue. Like any magazine for a fairly broad but specialized audience, if I get two to four good items out of all that is available from each issue, I’m getting my money’s worth, and that’s the way it has been for the past year. Fairly often, when I get more from DiskWorld, that’s even better. Your graphics ALWAYS hit the mark!
Gratefully,
Stan Hooper

Mr. Hooper:
Thank you for your kind words. As I stated in my first response to Mr. Wacker, we have a real problem in regard to publishing the system on each disk. We will have to come to a decision on the matter soon. I will pass on your comments about the clip art to our graphics department.

I’ve never written you a letter
I’ve never once complained
I’ve been receiving Diskworld
Since Diskworld first became
You give me education
I’m saving for my tot
From Periodic tables
To geography that’s hot
The ’fonts’ fill my peers with envy
I’ve installed each one you see
And for the price you charge
They’re practically free
My RealFont, my Lipservice
Well all Inits are grand
I install every one
Just to keep on hand
The DA’s are amazing
You’ve given me three or four
And they are such a thrill
Please give me many more
The card games are really nice
When things arn’t going well
I play under multi-finder
So no one else can tell.
The clip art is a value
The quality divine
I catalog it quickly
And use it all the time
From Certificate Creator
Disklog and Testmaker
The tips and hints
And user comments
You guys have got a
Winner!
Each issue is a treasure
You won’t hear me complain
A bomb every now and then
Does not itself cause rain
So keep on doin’ what you’re doin’
And pat some backs for me
After another dozen issues
I’ll tell you what I see!
